One of Delaware’s largest annual fundraising events, the Special Olympics Delaware Lewes Polar Bear Plunge, is set to take place at 1 p.m. on Sunday, Feb. 2, in Rehoboth Beach.
Now in its 34th year, the event began in 1992 with just 78 participants raising $7,000. Last year, the plunge saw 4,380 participants who helped raise nearly $1.5 million through both in-person and virtual plunges. Over the years, the event has brought in more than $17.2 million to support Special Olympics Delaware. These funds help provide sports training, competitions, health programs, education, and leadership opportunities for individuals with intellectual disabilities.
“The Polar Bear Plunge is more than just a fundraiser – it’s a celebration of community and inclusion,” said David Halley, president and CEO of Special Olympics Delaware. “Every participant, sponsor, and supporter contributes to a legacy that directly improves the lives of our athletes. Their dedication inspires us to ensure everyone has a chance to thrive, both on and off the field.”
The weekend kicks off on Saturday, Feb. 1, with several activities, including a 5K Run to the Plunge, a sand sculpting demonstration, Fire & Ice Festivities, and a Restaurant Chili Tasting contest. After the main event on Sunday, participants can enjoy an après plunge party at the Rehoboth Beach Convention Center.
